Interactive Workshop: Writing Spicy Scenes
Calling all romance writers, readers, and anyone who has ever cringed at the word "member" while reading a smutty scene!
Join us at Fiction Beer Company for an interactive writing workshop on May 17th from 2-4pm about all things spice! We'll talk about what sets a good spicy scene apart from a great one, how to write your own in a way that stands out from the crowd, and set the record straight once and for all about which words to pick—and which ones give us the ick.
Book Club
For May, we reviewed some past polls and voted again on second-place books. The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager took a close lead as our next pick!
About the book:
Casey Fletcher, a recently widowed actress trying to escape a streak of bad press, has retreated to the peace and quiet of her family’s lake house in Vermont. Armed with a pair of binoculars and several bottles of bourbon, she passes the time watching Tom and Katherine Royce, the glamorous couple living in the house across the lake. They make for good viewing—a tech innovator, Tom is powerful; and a former model, Katherine is gorgeous.
One day on the lake, Casey saves Katherine from drowning, and the two strike up a budding friendship. But the more they get to know each other—and the longer Casey watches—it becomes clear that Katherine and Tom’s marriage isn’t as perfect as it appears. When Katherine suddenly vanishes, Casey immediately suspects Tom of foul play. What she doesn’t realize is that there’s more to the story than meets the eye—and that shocking secrets can lurk beneath the most placid of surfaces.

About the Book:
In #1 New York Times bestselling author Casey McQuiston's latest romantic comedy, two bisexual exes accidentally book the same European food and wine tour and challenge each other to a hookup competition to prove they're over each other—except they're definitely not.
Theo and Kit have been a lot of things: childhood best friends, crushes, in love, and now estranged exes. After a brutal breakup on the transatlantic flight to their dream European food and wine tour, they exited each other's lives once and for all.
Time apart has done them good. Theo has found confidence as a hustling bartender by night and aspiring sommelier by day, with a long roster of casual lovers. Kit, who never returned to America, graduated as the reigning sex god of his pastry school class and now bakes at one of the finest restaurants in Paris. Sure, nothing really compares to what they had, and life stretches out long and lonely ahead of them, but—yeah. It's in the past.
All that remains is the unused voucher for the European tour that never happened, good for 48 months after its original date and about to expire. Four years later, it seems like a great idea to finally take the trip. Solo. Separately.
It's not until they board the tour bus that they discover they've both accidentally had the exact same idea, and now they're trapped with each other for three weeks of stunning views, luscious flavors, and the most romantic cities of France, Spain, and Italy. It's fine. There's nothing left between them. So much nothing that, when Theo suggests a friendly wager to see who can sleep with their hot Italian tour guide first, Kit is totally game. And why stop there? Why not a full-on European hookup competition?
But sometimes a taste of everything only makes you crave what you can't have.

About the Book:
A space princess on the run and a notorious outlaw soldier become unlikely allies in this imaginative, sexy space opera adventure—the first in an exciting science fiction trilogy.
In the far distant future, the universe is officially ruled by the Royal Consortium, but the High Councillors, the heads of the three High Houses, wield the true power. As the fifth of six children, Ada von Hasenberg has no authority; her only value to her High House is as a pawn in a political marriage. When her father arranges for her to wed a noble from House Rockhurst, a man she neither wants nor loves, Ada seizes control of her own destiny. The spirited princess flees before the betrothal ceremony and disappears among the stars.
Ada eluded her father’s forces for two years, but now her luck has run out. To ensure she cannot escape again, the fiery princess is thrown into a prison cell with Marcus Loch. Known as the Devil of Fornax Zero, Loch is rumored to have killed his entire chain of command during the Fornax Rebellion, and the Consortium wants his head.
When the ship returning them to Earth is attacked by a battle cruiser from rival House Rockhurst, Ada realizes that if her jilted fiancé captures her, she’ll become a political prisoner and a liability to her House. Her only hope is to strike a deal with the dangerous fugitive: a fortune if he helps her escape.
But when you make a deal with an irresistibly attractive Devil, you may lose more than you bargained for...

Star Wars Trivia
Join us for a night in a galaxy not so far away as our annual Star Wars trivia night returns!
Test your knowledge of hyperspace routes, legendary Jedi, notorious bounty hunters, and the countless worlds of the saga—from the dusty streets of Tatooine to the halls of the Imperial Senate. Whether you’re a devoted member of the Rebel Alliance or quietly working for the Empire, gather your crew and prepare for multiple rounds of trivia that will challenge even the most dedicated fans.
To mark the occasion, we’re tapping Maltering the Deal, a beer inspired by one of the most memorable lines from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. This brew is our own negotiation with the dark side of brewing—rich malt character balanced with just enough bite to keep things interesting. Smooth, bold, and a little dangerous, it’s the kind of beer that might make you reconsider the terms of your agreement after the first sip.
Costumes are highly encouraged (and will be rewarded with a beer shot), lightsabers welcome, and teams will compete for prizes worthy of the Outer Rim. So assemble your squad, study up on your Star Wars lore, and come see if the Force is strong with your trivia team. Just remember… we may alter the deal—so pray we don’t alter it any further.
Star Wars Beer Tapping: Maltering the Deal
The dark side is taking over the brewhouse! The halls of Echo Base shake and tremble with every strike the Empire attacks with. We will make our escape to Cloud City only to come face to face with the very evil that has spread across the galaxy. Can we overcome these new hops and defeat a tyrannical empire?
This year’s Star Wars release takes a turn to the dark side as we are Maltering the Deal. Our famous Never Tell Me the Hops has been overcome by the dark malts of Carafa III and Midnight Wheat that lend rich and crisp but shadowy notes. While the bitterness from the hops has taken hold, there is still hope as you taste the tropical fruits and citrus from the Galaxy, Motueka, and El Dorado.
As you take your first sip, you may find the beer adjusting the terms of your expectations. By the time you reach the bottom of the glass, you’ll realize there was never really a choice. Just make sure this bitter, dark IPA doesn’t choke you on the way down.
“I am altering the deal. Pray I don't alter it any further.”
It goes on tap at 2pm on Thursday, April 30th to kick off our Star Wars weekend! Stick around for Star Wars Trivia at 7pm and come back on Saturday, May 2nd for our limited edition glassware release.

Book Club
April is World Autism Month and we're bringing that to our book club pick: Strong Female Character by Fern Brady.
About the book:
Strong Female Character is about the years in between, and the unique combination of sexism and ableism that so often prevents autistic women from getting diagnosed until adulthood. Coming from a working-class Scottish Catholic family, Fern wasn’t exactly poised to receive an open-minded acceptance of her neurodivergence. With the piercing clarity and wit that has put her at the top of the British comedy scene, she now reflects on the ways her undiagnosed autism influenced her youth, from the tree that functioned as her childhood best friend to the psychiatric facility where she ended up when neither her parents nor school knew what to do with her.
